WE BUILD COMMUNITIES

America’s SBDCs help make the dream of small business ownership a reality for more Americans — creating jobs and opportunities that build communities throughout the nation.

See how the Mississippi SBDC has served its communities.

RURAL DEVELOPMENT

There's no such thing as too young!

The MS-SBDC exhibited at Imagine the Possibilities, an interactive career expo held in Tupelo, MS for 8th graders. We offered the 7,000 students from 17 counties ideas and information about starting their own businesses as students.

ACCELERATORS + INCUBATORS

Taking the Leap Accelerator Program

MS-SBDC launched a virtual Accelerator Program in October 2020, entitled "Taking the Leap." Clients were directed into the program through Outreach Events targeting rural and underserved communities. Forty registrants attended the program.

EXPORT

Southern Stamped and A Piece of Them

Small Family owned business located in Seminary, MS that is working to export its products to a major pet products chain store in Canada was able to navigate the complex negotiations, vendor set up and export process with the assistance of the Mississippi Development Authority, US Commercial Service/US Export Assistance Center and the MS-SBDC International Trade Expert Tony Cambas. The state, federal and MS-SBDC partners collaborated resulting in a signed export contract.

MILLENNIALS + GEN-Z

Kevin Roberts, Owner of the Fit Chef

MS-SBDC assisted Kevin in his business plan and funding process. Kevin modified the kitchen in a historic building formally housing the Hotel Vicksburg. Fit Chef grew from selling healthy meals on the sidewalk of the hotel to two more locations in Vicksburg and another in Madison. Fit Chef operates a food truck as well as an ax throwing bar venture in Vicksburg. Kevin also provides healthy meals to the homeless in his community.

TECH DEVELOPMENT

Protecting Mississippi Businesses through CyberSecurity

The Mississippi State University Small Business Development Center's CyberSecurity Project is a collaborative partnership to provide best practices, standards, and other resources to small businesses in securing intellectual property and data.

COVID-19 RESPONSE

Clairmont & Company's Quick Pivot Brings Lasting Opportunities

Home goods manufacturer Clairmont & Co from Laurel, MS retooled their manufacturing line to produce masks and other PPE when the Covid-19 shutdown first hit. This quick pivot allowed the owners Stephen and his wife Deshawn to bring back their 36 employees and fill a need locally for PPE equipment. As other national suppliers got back in the game, the Clairmonts repurposed the sewing machines they purchased to make PPE to add a pillow and soft goods line to their permanent catalogue.
